How an HVAC System Works

Heating is still pretty simple. Hot engine coolant get drawn into s heater core, where a front-mounted fan blows outside air over the core's fins. That warm air is released through your air vents into the passenger space.

Cooling involves more parts in the process. A compressor pressurizes refrigerant and turns it into a hot gas. The condenser then cools that gas, turning it into a liquid. The liquid subsequently flows through an expansion valve and is turned back into a gas, but now at a lower pressure. Finally, an evaporator cools the gas down as a fan sends the chilled air through your air vents.

How to Spot AC Problems

Most likely, you'll know when your HVAC system isn’t operating right. Here are some signs to look for, just in case:

• You can't keep the cabin at the right temperature
• You notice the sweet, syrupy smell of coolant is present
