Your Honda can have all kinds of factory lighting, ranging from headlights and daytime running lights (DRLs) to taillights.

A headlight has two functions: low-beam and high-beam. Low beams work for most driving environments. High beams, you use when it's very dark, as they're brighter and they shine wider. You can also use headlights as hazard lights or "flashers." These warn drivers nearby of danger, distress, or road hazards. DRLs and tail lighting give drivers in front of and behind you a better view of where and how far away you are.

You may have a light for just about every other use you can imagine, too, depending on what Honda model you drive. Your turn signals or "blinkers," for one, are lights that indicate a turn or lane change. Brake lights, on the other hand, indicate slowdowns and stops. Fog lights shine low and brightly in bad weather, illuminating your surroundings better. There's even specialty lighting for accenting exterior accessories like license plate frames.

Headlamp or tail lamp, though, every light is one of three bulb types. Halogen lamps, you'll find in smaller Honda cars. Xenon or high-intensity discharge (HID) lamps, on the other hand, you'll find in the brand's sports cars. Xenon lamps shine brighter and last longer. LED lamps are commonest in newer Honda vehicles. They don't create a lot of heat, as they're designed to be highly energy-efficient.

What lights does your Honda use, then? The answer may be body style-specific, but when to change a car light bulb isn't. Change Xenon bulbs every three years when they dim. Replace LED bulbs if their electronics fail or they burn out. Change halogen bulbs approximately every two years.
